This 6 x 6 inch vintage paper collage, Indestructible Truth, utilizes old handwritten pages, ledgers, and mail ephemera to create a sense of the passage of time. It also incorporates antique sheet music, a dried azalea flower, a piece of satin ribbon, and a feather. I love to collect these little “treasures” and then pass them on to be enjoyed by others. One of the reasons I use old books and ephemera (things that would normally be thrown out) is that I get a feeling of satisfaction from recycling things that might otherwise be discarded. While I’m working with vintage papers and other objects, I can’t help but wonder about the people who originally used them. What were their lives like? Were they really so different from ours? Sometimes I make up stories about them as I try to imagine their experiences. Giving these objects new life in my work is gratifying to me, and will hopefully allow the viewer to feel a connection to the past and to the people who once used these materials as part of their daily lives.
When I think of Indestructible Truth, I think of something that is basic, real, and has stood the test of time. Words written down on a page have a permanence that spoken words don’t have. These scraps of pages and other objects were once parts of someone’s lives, and can now be a part of yours. All of these “treasurs” have been combined into a simple composition that is balanced and harmonious. The soft ivories, beiges, and blues are subtle enough to look at home on any wall in your home or office. Make this vintage paper collage part of your life!
