Description

Sometimes, especially when I’m out in the woods, I feel a strong connection to something mystical. Prayer is a piece of spiritual mixed media art that depicts a woman as she communicates with a higher power, whether it’s with God, nature, or even if it’s only with herself. I create art out of a need to express the ideas I feel are most important.  My inspiration, very simply put, is nature. I’m fascinated by how the universe works- by the relationships and connections between one thing and another. Related to this is my conviction that every part of the earth is sacred and that we are part of the earth, not separate from it.  Now more than ever, we have to treat the earth with respect.  At the most basic level, we are made of the same stuff as the stars, the trees, the air, the ocean. Having come from the same source, we are all deeply connected.

Making spiritual mixed media art like Prayer is a complex process, with many steps. I normally start with a multi-layered monoprint, building up layers of transparent ink to create a rich, colorful design. Often I use leaves or other plant matter in some of the pressings, which are done with a hand-powered etching press. As the layers build, I begin to form an idea of the composition I eventually hope to achieve in the finished work. After the ink has dried, I continue to add layers of paint, inks, and other materials. These are the layers that form the artworks’ details, such as figures, animals, or birds. Knowing when a piece is finished can be tricky. It takes considerable reflection, and sometimes I may put the piece away for a while, then bring it out later to see how I feel about it. When I’m sure it’s finished, I seal it with archival preservative to prevent deteriorization.

I hope you will choose to purchase a print of this piece or another of my works to bring a sense of mystical peace to your home.
