This small monoprint focuses on the beauty of nature in motion. The forces of nature are huge, but sometimes just a small glimpse can capture their essence. In a smaller space, the artist has to rely on visual “shorthand” – a blue swirl to represent water, a line or two to suggest the motion of the wind. The result may be semi-abstract, yet “feels” like wind and water. At the same time, we can appreciate the forms, lines, and colors themselves. Because I often take photographs of the creek on my land out in the country, I’ve come to realize how zooming in on one spot in the stream yields an abstract image that is also absolutely real. This is what I tried to convey in this small monoprint. It makes me think of standing beside the creek as the wind blows, while the water moves the floating leaves. The contrasting yellow/red fern leaf brings in an element of realism, while drawing your eye and providing a focal point. The soft blues, yellows, and tans are soothing to the eye.
With the emphasis on natural forms, I hope to communicate my deep belief in the sacred nature of our earth. The layers of inks with their rich, pure colors represent the layers of earth, moss, and stone. They speak of secret places deep in the woods, where ordinary magic happens every day. Layers of transparent light-fast lithography inks are built up on sheets of Rives BFK 100% cotton printmaking paper. Other media, such as acrylic ink, watercolor pencils, and paint may be added. This nature inspired painting may remind you of your own experiences of being in nature, or bring memories of times you were inspired by the beauty of the earth. I hope it will bring a sense of peace to any room in your home or office.
