Seed Sigil II
Seed Sigil II is a small botanical monoprint featuring a placentation diagram. Placentation is a scientific term referring to the design of the seed of a plant. I see them as magical symbols, or sigils. I hope this piece will remind you of the amazing intricacies of nature, and the peaceful feeling of the forests. I think Seed Sigil II would be a lovely addition to any home or office space.

Seed Sigil II is a small botanical monoprint featuring a placentation diagram. Placentation, to put it simply, refers to the inner layout or design of the seed of a plant. That's really about as far as my knowledge goes, and that's far enough for me. I use these diagrams in my art because I enjoy the beauty of the designs. It's like nature has made up all these magical symbols or blueprints to tell the plants which way to grow. For that reason I sometimes think of them as sigils, defined as, "an inscribed or painted symbol considered to have magical power." I guess you could call it a metaphor, artistic licence, or just my crazy convoluted thinking. The important thing is the beauty of the design, and you don't need to know anything at all to appreciate that.
I used a unique variety of mixed media to create this small botanical monoprint. First, the monoprint was made by building up layers of translucent inks on heavyweight 100% cotton printmaking paper. This piece was done in one of my favorite color schemes, teal and purple, which I think is so pleasing to the eye. Next, when it was dry, I added some drawing with inktense watercolor pencils. Once I felt the composition's color and line to be well-balanced, I drew the placentation diagram with white ink. At some later time I decided to stitch the outline of the diagram with embroidery floss, as well as some of the other lines in the leaves.
I hope this piece will remind you of the amazing intricacies of nature, and the peaceful feeling of relaxing in the forests. I think Seed Sigil II would be a lovely addition to any home or office space.
