Fragments of Memory II is a narrative collage on an antique book cover. The antique and vintage ephemera I used to create this piece, along with the soft and faded colors, help to create a dreamy mood of times gone by. Fragments of Memory II is a narrative collage on an antique book cover.  It doesn't tell a story in the same way that children's book illustrations or church frescoes do. Here, a narrative is only suggested, leaving the viewer to fill in the details with his or her own imagination. In this way, the viewer becomes a participant in the work, and has a more personal engagement with it.

What do you think the story is? Is the woman longing for her home in Africa, or dreaming of ancestors who came from there? Does the hummingbird suggest a message carried to her family, so far way? Perhaps she is a gardener, or a wise woman who knows the healing powers of various herbs. She could also be a lace-maker. Then again, it may make you think of something entirely different.

The antique and vintage ephemera I used to create this narrative collage sets the story in perhaps the 18th or 19th century. Some of the ingredients used in this art piece are: vintage maps and an antique book page, an antique postcard, old stamps, and other ephemera, as well as vintage sewing patterns. I also included vintage lace and textile fragments, image transfers, colored pencils, metallic ink, and hand stitching. These materials, along with the soft and faded colors, help to create a dreamy mood of times gone by.

All of this influences the feelings you may have when looking at it. Everyone who views it will sense a slightly different mood. If you enjoy imagining stories about this collage, or find its mood appealing, I hope you'll consider adding it to the decor of your home or office.
