This mystical collage painting
was created out of my interest in the intersection of science and spirituality. I haven’t been able to find a good way of describing what it means to me, but I’ll give it a try. It has to do with the idea that changes in consciousness may be synonymous with a shift from one dimension to another. For years, I’ve been reading books about quantum physics, and how there are commonalities between these scientific theories and some Asian philosophies such as Buddhism and Daoism. When a shaman goes into a trance, might that be another dimension? When we meditate, and our brainwaves change, does this reflect a change on a subatomic level? Science teaches us that that change is constant, one thing slowly becoming another. A tree becomes soil as it decomposes; a caterpillar becomes a butterfly; carbon becomes a diamond. Throughout our lives, we are changing all the time – mentally, physically, and spiritually. This piece is an attempt to visually express a spiritual/dimensional transformation.
Dimensional Shift is a mystical collage painting that seemed to just kind of “happen”. I pulled a few things out of my scrap drawer, and the piece came together easily, without much conscious thought on my part. That’s when the “magic” of art-making happens; when everything just flows. I used a lot of my favorite deep, cerulean blue, to create that “dreamy” feeling, mixing in other colors to give it depth. The figure, in the midst of some kind of transformation, is loosely based on an antique Tibetan drawing. He has one wing, and you can see his “old self” next to him in dark blue. A butterfly at the crown chakra symbolizes transformation and re-birth.
Fine art prints of this painting are available at my ArtPal gallery in a wide variety of sizes. Canvas prints and frames are also available.
