Heron and Crow

$229.00

I had lots of fun creating this mixed media bird painting. The background is a monoprint made with multiple layers of intensely colored lithography inks on heavy-weight printmaking paper. Once the print was dry, the birds were drawn and then painted with watercolor, colored pencil, and artist pens. This piece is for sale now for the first time. I hope you can find a place for it in your home or office!

Heron and Crow is a beautiful, colorful painting mounted on archival black matboard and ‘floated’ behind an off-white mat. It is framed behind clear plexiglass in an antique gold finished metal frame. See the included image for reference. If you would prefer to frame it yourself, please contact me.

Description

Heron and Crow is a mixed media bird painting that was originally done as an illustration for a book I was writing. The book isn’t finished, and it may be a while until it is. The basic premise of the story was that we need both day and night, dark and light, land and water, yin and yang, etc. We need opposites to create a balanced whole. I attempted to express this idea through the overlapping and positive/negative mixing of the black and white birds, who are the main mythical characters in the story. I think this piece functions well enough as a painting on its own. I really like the contrast of the black and white birds, and the multi-colored abstract background to balance it out. I love birds for their beauty, and their seemingly magical qualities. I love birds, and they appear in my work often, throughout the various galleries. They are one of the many forms in nature that have become important symbols in my artwork. Crows and Herons, in particular, have special meaning for me. Birds have always played an important part in the symbolism, myths, and folktales of many cultures. They are amazing, almost magical, and represent freedom, the spiritual world, and messages being carried to another realm or dimension.

Once the print was dry, the birds were drawn and then painted with watercolor, colored pencil, and artist pens. I then went back over the background with water-based crayon marks, to add interest and to blend the colors together more. This piece is for sale now for the first time.
