Visual art is like poetry in the sense that it can affect us deeply without being completely understood. Sometimes the emotion or mood it creates is more important than intellectual understanding. Such is the case with this small mixed media painting, titled Falling. To begin with, it was made entirely by intuition, just gluing on layers of vintage paper for the sheer fun of it. This can become a very meditative process, not attempting to control the piece, but just letting it happen. Tearing off some of the collaged papers as I went along, in a process called decollage, creates a more textured and interesting surface. I think it adds a lot of visual interst as well. I continued adding and subtracting layers of paper until I began to see some interesting shapes emerge, and a composition began to form in my mind. At this point, I begain adding colors with ink and watercolor pencils, creating a spiral shape in the center, with the pure white angel outlined in yellow at the top. I can’t really tell you, in words, what this piece means; I speak more clearly with images. This allows the viewer to find their own meaning in of the piece, becoming a sort of ‘co-creator.’ There is no right or wrong way to interpret a work of art. If it touches you emotionally, or you enjoy looking at it, that’s enough.
Falling is a small mixed media painting created from layers of vintage papers, acrylic inks, and watercolor pencils. This is made with several layers of torn vintage paper and book pages, giving it a soft “atmospheric” look. The shades of ivory and blue-gray, contrasting with the yellow and white angel would blend well with almost any decor. Falling is 6 x 4 inches, and would look great matted with a simple frame.
